Clay Pigeon Raceway in Dorset is a circuit that rewards those who know it. For Nelson Taylor, arriving for Rounds 5 and 6 of the Superone XKart Championship, it was a first visit. Wet conditions on Saturday made grip unpredictable throughout the day, and with two rounds across the weekend, the pressure to adapt quickly and deliver consistently across every session was real.
Round 5 Qualifying
Saturday qualifying placed Nelson P15 in a competitive Junior Max field. In tricky wet conditions, extracting a clean lap was difficult for the whole grid. P15 was the starting point, but Nelson had already shown in previous rounds that grid positions are not the full story.
Round 5 Heats
Both heats saw Nelson advance to P10, picking up positions in each run and building his understanding of a circuit he had never raced at before. The wet conditions demanded patience and precision in equal measure, and the consistency across both heats was a clear positive.
Round 5 Final
The final showed exactly what Nelson is capable of. He was running P5 and showing front-running pace before contact and a dropped nose cone ended his challenge and dropped him back through the field. That result did not reflect the drive or the speed. The pace to finish inside the top five on a new circuit, in the wet, was there.
Round 6 Qualifying
Sunday’s qualifying delivered P16, but before the heats began, a penalty placed Nelson at the back of the grid. That kind of setback, through no fault of the driving, is one of the more brutal elements of karting at this level. The only response is to race.
Round 6 Heats
Heat 1 was the response. Starting P23, Nelson drove forward to P15, gaining eight positions against a field that had no intention of making space. Heat 2 was harder going. Starting P23 again, he finished P18, but the positions gained were earned through pressure and persistence on a circuit he was still learning across both days.
Round 6 Final
The final was where it came together. Starting P18, Nelson crossed the line P9, gaining nine places from a grid position that should have made a top-ten result very difficult. It didn’t.
Taking the Learnings Forward
Across both rounds at Clay Pigeon, Nelson Taylor showed front-running pace in Round 5 and a determined recovery in Round 6. A first visit to a new circuit, in mixed conditions, with a penalty to overcome, and he still delivered a P9 final finish on Sunday. The clean qualifying sessions will come, and when they do, the results will follow. Nelson races with the support of Tooley Motorsport, SureSIM, XKart, OTM and the National Autistic Society.
