Nelson Taylor Battles to a Podium at SuperOne Rounds 11 and 12, Shenington

SuperOne returned to Shenington for Rounds 11 and 12, and Nelson Taylor’s weekend told two completely different stories on consecutive days. Saturday was quick but costly, undone twice by the same technical penalty. Sunday was the answer, a session-by-session climb that ended with Nelson on the podium in P2, part of an X-KART one-two.

Round 11: Pace Undone by Penalties

Qualifying was solid, Nelson putting the kart P6 on a stacked Junior Max grid, and Heat 1 followed with a steady P9. Heat 2 was where the day turned, a five-place penalty for a fairing infringement dropping what had been a stronger run down to P16.

The Final looked set to put that right. Nelson started P3 and the pace matched the grid slot, but the same fairing issue brought a second five-place penalty, and a finish that should have been inside the top ten was classified P15 instead. Two penalties for the same problem in one day is a frustrating way to close it out, and the pace on show made it harder to take.

Round 12: The Turnaround

Sunday started with intent. Qualifying moved up to P5, and Heat 1 brought a solid P8. Heat 2 was the session that mattered most, Nelson finding real pace to come home P4 and line up the Final from a position worth having.

The Final delivered. Nelson carried the momentum straight through the field and crossed the line P2, just 0.146 seconds behind teammate Jude Puddefoot, an X-KART one-two on a day that could not have gone much better. It was the fastest second sector in the class along the way too, a sign the pace was there for more than just the one lap.

A Weekend of Two Halves

Two rounds, and two very different outcomes from the same amount of raw pace. Saturday showed genuine speed that never got the finishing position it deserved, twice caught out by the same fairing penalty. Sunday showed what happens when that pace is allowed to convert into a result, qualifying, two heats and a final that all pointed the same direction and finished on the podium.

The story of this weekend is really the gap between the two days. Saturday’s pace was never in question, P6 in qualifying and a Final start from P3 back that up, but two fairing penalties for the same issue turned a potential top-ten into P15. That is the kind of detail a team needs to eliminate before it costs more than points on a single weekend. Sunday showed exactly what Nelson is capable of when nothing gets in the way, a steady climb through qualifying and both heats into a Final that delivered a genuine podium and the fastest second sector in the class.
