Nelson Taylor headed into Round 2 of the Whilton Mill Kart Club Championship with something to prove after three weeks away from the kart. By the end of Saturday’s practice sessions, it was clear the time off had done nothing to blunt his pace. He was within a couple of tenths of the front runners almost immediately, which in an 84-driver field is not something you can fake.
Qualifying
Qualifying didn’t reflect that pace. Nelson was placed in the final qualifying group, built his speed through the session, and was tracking toward a strong time when an electrical issue forced him to retire on lap three. The time he’d already set was enough for P11 in his group, but it left him starting further down the grid than his pace deserved.
Heat 1
Contact early in the race pushed Nelson onto the grass on the run to Christmas Corner, and a kart spinning ahead at Turn 5 dropped him to 32nd by the end of lap one. From there he drove forward to P17 while posting the fourth fastest lap of the heat, just 0.06 seconds off the quickest. The pace was there in the middle of a race that had gone badly wrong.
Heat 2
More contact at Turn 2 on the opening lap forced Nelson into avoiding action and dropped him to 26th. He recovered to P14 through a series of clean overtakes that showed both patience and precision.
B Final
Starting third, Nelson drove a controlled race to finish second, just 0.63 seconds behind the winner and over four seconds clear of third place. That result earned promotion to the A Final.
A Final
Starting P32 in the A Final is a tall order against a field of that quality. Nelson worked his way forward to P22. Not the result the weekend’s pace warranted, but a meaningful gain from the back of a stacked grid.
Championship Standing
By the end of Sunday, Nelson moved from P13 to P11 in the WMKC Championship standings. The electrical issue in qualifying, the lap-one contact in both heats, and the long-shot A Final start all conspired against a clean run. What the weekend did show is that the speed is there, the fight is there, and Nelson Taylor is capable of making ground when circumstances are against him. Nelson races with the support of Tooley Motorsport, SureSIM, XKart, OTM and the National Autistic Society.
