Glan Y Gors is the kind of circuit that exposes any weakness in a setup or a driver. Tight, technical and unforgiving, it demands precision from the first lap of qualifying through to the final corner of the final race. Nelson Taylor arrived at GYG for Rounds 3 and 4 of the Superone XKart Championship across two days, knowing that a clean run through every session was the target.
Round 3 Qualifying
Qualifying put Nelson P11 in his group. In a field where fractions of a second separate the entire grid, P11 was a workable position. Not ideal, but enough to race from.
Round 3 Heat 1
Heat 1 saw Nelson edge forward to P12. A modest gain on paper, but the drive was measured and the pace was consistent throughout. He was finding his way around a circuit that demands respect before it gives anything back.
Round 3 Heat 2
Heat 2 was tougher. Nelson crossed the line P15, but on-track contact resulted in a nose cone penalty that dropped him back to P22 in the final classification. Those moments are part of motorsport at this level. Contact happened, the penalty followed, and Nelson had to reset for the final.
Round 3 Final
The final told a different story. Nelson charged through to P13 and posted a lap time just 0.100 seconds off the fastest lap of the race. That single data point says more than the finishing position. The pace was there. In a clean, uninterrupted run, Nelson showed exactly what he is capable of when things go his way.
Round 4 Qualifying
Sunday’s qualifying left something on the table. Nelson needed a bigger gap in traffic to extract the full lap, which left him P11 again. In a field where the difference between P5 and P15 can be measured in fractions, that cost him grid position heading into the heats.
Round 4 Heat 1
Heat 1 was where the real Nelson Taylor showed up. He worked his way forward to P7 and posted the second fastest lap of the heat. That combination, a strong finishing position and pace to match, is exactly what teams and observers look for. It was not a lucky P7. It was earned through clean, aggressive driving.
Round 4 Heat 2
Heat 2 saw Nelson start and finish P11, but again he posted the second fastest lap. The pace was consistent. The kart was quick. The grid position heading into the final was P7.
Round 4 Final
The final became a different kind of race. Opportunities to move forward didn’t come cleanly, and in a tight, competitive field, forcing positions that aren’t there costs more than it gains. Nelson read the race correctly, kept it clean, and brought it home P8 when others around him couldn’t manage the same.
Context and Progress
What makes the GYG weekend more significant is the context. The XKart that Nelson races in the Superone XKart Championship is a very different package to what he uses at WMKC. Round 4 at GYG was just his fourth race day in that kart. A top-ten finish in only his fourth outing, against a stacked Superone grid, speaks directly to his adaptability and natural ability.
